The West’s Heartsong

In light of the fact that I am taking a poetry class this semester, I thought I would share my very first (possibly only) attempt at free verse.

The West’s Heart-song
The pride of the West-folk;
Lord of field and mountain.
His heart is
Thunder.
A gem of the old world;
The mastered who is masterless.
His footfall is
Fire.
The bearer of men;
Yet the death of many.
His sinews are
Iron.
The wildest of the wild;
A remnant of a kingdom past.
His eyes are
Ancient.
The scion of Pegasus;
Messenger of gods.
Ode, the West’s heart-song:
Mustang.
